MILTON - Harry W. Berger, 94, died Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Watsontown Nursing & Rehab Center.

Born in Pottsgrove on March 10, 1930, he was a son of the late Ralph W. and Sarah (Hoffman) Berger.

On July 26, 1952, Harry married Lois E. (Edmundson) of Flat Rock, NC, and they celebrated 69 years of marriage together until her death on December 23, 2021.

Harry was a graduate of Milton High School Class of 1948.  After high school, he went on to serve his country proudly in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged on June 14, 1952, after being stationed on Guam and in Brooklyn, NY, where he became a Brooklyn Dodgers fan.  Harry was a forgiving man, who followed the Dodgers to Los Angeles.

He went on to work for Continental Can Co. of Milton for 31 years and was one of the last employees when the Milton plant closed in 1988. He then worked and retired from Furman Foods, Northumberland, in 1995.  Harry was skilled in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing. He could fix “anything,” and he did most of his own home repairs and remodeling, including repairing his then home on 6th Street in Milton after the 1972 flood.  He also built fun things for his family, including an ice skating rink and a jumbo picnic table that lasted for years.

Harry was a member of the former Christ Lutheran Church of Milton and Milton Legion Post 71.  He volunteered for the Milton Red Cross where he donated over 12 gallons of blood in his lifetime.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and taking them on vacations, including a yearly 4th of July trip to Flat Rock, NC. He often got a heavy foot while driving through Virginia, which wouldn’t escape the notice of the Virginia State Police. He took it well when his children tattled on him to family once they arrived in North Carolina.

Harry also enjoyed doing yard work, growing tomatoes, reading the newspaper, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy with his wife, taking his family for ice cream, going to church, and sitting in his chair with the TV remote in his hand and his cat on his lap.

He is survived by one son, Thomas E. Berger of Milton; two daughters, Linda G. Lahr of Shamokin and Susan K. Berger of Milton; three grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Nic McClure, Steven and Catharine Berger, and Heather and Mike Nacko; three great-grandchildren, Allyson McClure and Sydney and Landon Nacko; one brother, Lawrence Berger of Vicksburg; one sister, Rachel Everitt of Buffalo, NY; one daughter-in-law, Donna Berger of Madison, AL; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Harry was preceded in death by one son, William H. “Bill” Berger; two sisters, Helen Fisher and Mary Klinger; one son-in-law, Donald Lahr; and his most recent feline friend, Eddie.
